Jesus Our Lord and the Model for Us
become like a slave for our benefit. Jesus was obedient to God, even unto death on a cross. However, the story does not end there. God exalted Jesus and gave him the name Lord—higher than any other name—“so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:10-11 NRSV). Jesus is described from humility to the highest exaltation—a truly amazing proclamation, bolstering the faith of first-century Christians. In turn, the claim that Jesus will be worshiped by every element of humanity should cause contemporary Christians to marvel at the scope of His Lordship.
With such a magnanimous Lord, the only acceptable response is total allegiance—from first-century Christians living in the Roman Empire to 21st century Christians living in present-day cultures. Following Jesus as Lord requires our all—from each of us. Even so, our course has already been charted by the Lord Jesus. Humility, regarding others as we regard ourselves, will produce unmistakable unity. When we follow the way of Christ, we too can bring glory to God.
